Number of Tigers in India
The official tiger census brought good news for the wildlife travellers. For the first time in a decade, the number of tigers in the country has increased. This has brought back lot of relief to the conservationists and even the tourism industry is expecting an optimistic upsurge in the interest of wildlife travellers as India is a country that harbours around half of the live population of wild tigers in the world. Hence, the almost ten percent increase, that has taken the numbers of tigers in the country to 1550 is being hailed by the tourism industry too.India has some of the most reputed tiger reserves that are being taken care of and funded by the Project Tiger-a Government of India scheme under which, since 1973, government is making an all out effort to protect the animal using sound wildlife management techniques, introducing eco-development practices and by incorporating protection measures. It is quite heartening to notice that the exhaustive efforts of the government and conservationists have paid rich dividends.
In between, Indian wildlife segment of tourism sector did face rough weathers as doubts were being raised regarding the authenticity of tiger figures. However, this news will certainly put the things on an upswing.
Some of the well-known Project Tiger National Parks and Sanctuaries that attract most of the tourists are Ranthambore in Rajasthan and Corbett in Uttarakhand. Both these parks are well-known for mesmerising the travellers with their floral, faunal and geographical diversity.
This year, the census figures also included detailed site-wise break down of the tiger population, which led to an interesting assessment of what works and what doesn't. This estimate reiterates the need to strengthen the protection of core tiger areas and the link areas that act as a corridor for the animal, along with the management of surrounding areas. Experts opine that such a holistic approach is essential to keep the numbers growing.
Erco Travels has introduced some interesting travel itineraries for the wildlife enthusiasts that combine forts and palaces or the cultural and romantic aspects of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand with a visit to one of the state's Tiger abode. These destinations are always a favourite, and a part of the must-visit destinations of the travellers visiting India. In fact, in Corbett, tourists also get to view the majestic elephant in great numbers, which acts as an added advantage. Even the famous elephant ride that takes the tourists right in the heart of the forest, and give them an opportunity to view the areas of wilderness, just in sync with the nature, is an exhilarating experience only a few can afford to forget.
