Lion, Gir Forest National Park

In the southwest of the peninsular state of Gujarat, lies the 116 square-mile sanctuary created to protect the last wild population of lion outside Africa. The Gir is a mixed deciduous forest with teak, flame of the forest, some acacia and banyan trees. It is a hilly tract with many rivers and offers long pleasant drives of beauty. Since 1913 when the lion population fell drastically to just 20 animals, the numbers have increased to around 239 (1985 census). The Asiatic lion is slightly smaller than its African cousin is and its mane is smaller. Other animals in the park are leopard, sambar deer, chital spotted deer, nilgai antelope, chowsingha four-horned antelope, chinkara gazelle, wild boar, langur monkey, jackal, and hyena

Location of The Park : In southwest region. of the Saurashtra peninsula, Gujarat. Nearest airport is Keshad, SOkm (30miles) from the park. It is also accessible by rail from Sasan Gir (1 km, .or half a mile, from the park)on the Western Railway).

Gir National Park Climate : Summer temperatures are hot and humid (43"C; 109"F);winter nights are freezing 40C, or 390F at night; 24"C, or 75"F, during the day).

When to go?: The park is closed from monsaan (June to September) till mid-Octaber. A pleasant time tovisit is December to May (although" May is hot, wildlife viewing is good).

How to Reach : Nearest tawn, Veraval, is 42km (26 miles) away. At a distance .of 6Skm (40 mile~), Junagadh is well-connected with Delhi and Bambay by train and bus.Buses and jeeps Jar hire at the! Gujarat Taurism Office at Diwan Chawk in Junagadh.

Wildlife in Gir National Park : The .only retreat in India .of the Asiatic Lion. Also present, Panther, Striped Hyena, many deer, species, Indian Wild Boar and Marsh Cracodile.
